The Essential Six: The Six Movement Patterns Every Beginner Should Learn

Almost every useful movement in real life comes down to six patterns: squat, hinge, push, pull, carry, and core. Structure's Essential Six is a beginner-friendly program — usually about five sessions built around twelve simple exercises — that teaches these patterns with proper form in a supportive, non-intimidating setting. Learn these six and you have the foundation for a lifetime of strong, confident movement.

The six patterns

Squat — sitting down and standing up: getting off a chair, lowering to the floor and back. Hinge — bending at the hips with a strong back: picking things up safely, from a laundry basket to a deadlift. Push — pressing away from you: a push-up, pressing overhead, closing a heavy door. Pull — bringing things toward you: rows, pull-downs, hauling something in. Carry — holding weight and moving with it: groceries, a toddler, luggage across a parking lot. Core — bracing and staying stable: protecting your back in every one of the patterns above.

Why we teach patterns, not just exercises

Beginners often think strength training is a random list of machines and moves. It isn't. When you learn the patterns, every specific exercise becomes a variation of something you already understand — and you can train confidently anywhere, for life. This is the heart of the Structure method: movement quality before load. We make sure you move well first, then add weight.

Who it's for

The Essential Six is built for true beginners — people who've never lifted, or haven't trained in years. About 80% of Structure's members started as first-time gym users, so you'll be in good company. It's also a natural starting point for members on a GLP-1 or returning after an injury. Bring a friend along for free.

What comes next

After the Essential Six, most members move into Synergy, our small-group coaching program, where we write your plan and coach every session so you keep building. Essential Six helps you learn the basics; Synergy helps you keep going.
