You don't need any experience to start strength training — just a willingness to learn. At Structure Sport & Fitness in Athens, Ohio, about 80% of our members had never trained in a gym before they joined. The simplest first step is a free Fitness Consult, where we get to know you, learn your goals, and map out a starting point that fits your body and your schedule.
"But I've never lifted a weight in my life."
Good — you're exactly who we built this place for. Most gyms are designed for people who already know what they're doing, which is why walking in can feel intimidating. Structure is the opposite: a strength-focused coaching community, not a bro gym, and our coaches assume you're starting fresh. You can't be behind here, because we meet you where you are. Your first sessions are about learning to move well, not lifting heavy.
What starting actually looks like
Most beginners start with the Essential Six — our beginner-friendly program (about five sessions) that teaches the six foundational movement patterns of strength training: squat, hinge, push, pull, carry, and core. You learn proper form on twelve simple exercises in a supportive, non-intimidating setting, so you build real confidence before you ever worry about how much weight is on the bar. From there, most members move into Synergy, our small-group coaching program, where we write your plan, coach every session, and keep you accountable — so you just show up and we handle the rest.
Why "movement quality before load" matters
We teach you to move well before we add weight. That's how beginners build a foundation safely and avoid the injuries and frustration that end most people's first attempt at the gym. Strength should show up in real life — carrying groceries, keeping up with your kids, feeling steady on the stairs — not just on a barbell.
